The Act of Walking
Martim Ramos

This workshop explores the creative potential of walking.

We will be addressing the act of walking through its various meanings: as a creative, critical and reflective gesture; as political and artistic; public and private; universal and individual. The participants will engage in ways of creating inspired by the act of walking, which may be explored as a methodology, a process, a theme or the object.

Open to a plurality of practices and interpretations stemming from the act of walking, the programme proposes:

- to collectively reflect on the ways we move around (the land/territory)

- to deepen our knowledge and to explore several artistic practices around the act of walking

- to create/develop either individual or collective creations around the subject of walking

The act of walking is a mundane action, at times mechanical and systematic.

But it is also a symbolic gesture, evoking unrest and questioning, with a great potential for change. It is a generator of places and moments, alternative discourses, and revealing actions. From the lone walk to the politically demanding march, the possibilities embodied by our steps are endless.

In the words of Rebecca Solnit, "walking, ideally, is a state in which the mind, the body, and the world are aligned, as though they were three characters finally in conversation together". By focusing on the act of walking, we wish to arouse new questionings, to kindle a diverse and collective dynamic, one that considers alternative paths (physical, symbolic and artistic); and above all, we aim at creating bodies of work that express new visions on the space we live in and on the ways we inhabit it.
The workshop will take place between April 5th and 20th. During that time, and beyond the in person sessions, the participants will be granted online follow up, with the aim of developing a project throughout the duration of the program. We welcome a wide range of practices such as photography, film, drawing, writing or sound recording.

The workshop will end with a collective show taking place at Atelier de Lisboa.
